Royal Botanical Garden in Madrid was founded by Charles III in 1781, according to plans by royal architects Francisco Sabatini and Juan de Villanueva. The inscription at the main entrance says “for the health and recreation of his vassals”. This garden promoted a series of expeditions that brought glorious times to Spanish botany, accompanied by illustrious names: Mutis, Ruiz y Pavón, Cavanilles, Boutelou, Lagasca, Colmeiro, etc. Their notes, engravings and drawings remain in the garden’s archives to this day. Research and investigation work is still going on at the garden. Restoration carried out by Leandro Silva and Antonio Fernández, along with the beauty of the layout, which has remained the same to this day, rank this amongst the most outstanding botanical gardens in Europe.
Piedra Monastery in Zaragoza is located in one of the most barren areas of Aragon. Its origins go back to the year 1194, when Alonso II, “the Chaste”, and his wife Doña Sancha donated an old Moorish castle to the Poblet monks to build a monastery and establish the Christian faith in the region. In 1840, Pablo Muntadas Campeny bought the monastery and carried on with its farming and livestock raising activities. His son, Juan Federico Muntadas, would give shape to the park by making changes, building paths and walkways and planting.
